LENTEN MEDITATION BOOKS AND “HOPE CHEST” MITE BOXES are available at the back of the church.  Please take a “Hope Chest”, fill it with your loose change during Lent, and bring it back on Easter Sunday.  All funds will benefit the Episcopal Relief & Development.  “Happy are those who consider the poor; the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.” Psalm 41:1;   Let’s fill the Hope Chests and heal a hurting world!

WEDNESDAYS in LENT series will continue on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. with a soup supper in the Undercroft.  All are invited be part of our Lenten study, “Sin, Heaven, and Hell in the Writings of C.S. Lewis.”  Lewis was one of the most influential and engaging Christian writers of the twentieth century, and his theological musings have had a subtle but powerful impact upon Anglicans for three generations.  The two books upon which we will concentrate are The Screwtape Letters and The Great Divorce.   They are both highly entertaining, provocative, and often humorous works of fiction that will forever change your concepts of sin, heaven, and hell.  The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end promptly at 8:00 p.m.  Childcare is available.  Please join us for this very enticing, intriguing and interesting topic!

ADULT SPIRITUALITY & EDUCATION: Adult Education and Spirituality plans for the winter promises to be informative and exciting.  The Kingdom of God!  Join us as we begin John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg’s series, First Light, Jesus and the Kingdom of God. SUNDAYS at 9 a.m.; Childcare is available. Here’s a look at what’s to come in the next few weeks…

  • March 11 – The Lake as the World
  • March 18 – Parables as Lures
  • March 25 – Jesus as Lord

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN – NEXT SUDNAY! It can be hard to broach the topic of child abuse or sexual misconduct with a congregation. It’s an uncomfortable subject, but it’s critical to educate church employees, Vestry and volunteers about child sexual misconduct and prevention. Prevention is the best way to ensure a secure community. Additionally, in accordance with our policies and procedures, the Diocesan Canons, and our insurance mandate, all members of the Vestry and adults working with children, must attend “Safeguarding God’s Children”. St. Peter’s is fortunate to have its own trainer, trainer Jill Mintzlaff, who will be offering two separate trainings to accommodate everyone’s schedule. Safeguarding God’s Children training opportunities will take place on Sunday, March 18th and on Sunday April 15th. The purpose of the “Safeguarding God’s Children” program is to teach adults what they need to know to prevent sexual abuse.  The premise of the program is if every adult can protect one child, each one of us will change one life, and together we will make a difference in this generation of children.

The training will begin at 11:45 a.m. in the main church lounge and last approximately 3 hours (refreshments will be provided). Please R.S.V.P. to Michelle so that all information and packets can be assembled beforehand

ST. CECECILA’S will meet at St. Peter’s at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21st, to drive together to attend the Noon Concert at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2031 West 30th Street.   We have enjoyed these concerts every year; if you wish, you may drive directly to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and meet us there.  This year I have made reservations at 1 p.m.  for a private dining room at Le Petite Triangle at 1881 Fulton for lunch after the concert.  It is a charming French restaurant, serving crepes, salads, quiche and wine, with a view of the beautiful Carnegie Public Library across the street.  Please RSVP to Tina Uible at 440-331-5861, or call me with any questions.

HELP NEEDED… FLOOR WASHING: Join a small but ambitious group as we wash our beautiful altar and sanctuary wood floors on Saturday, March 31st.  We want our church to sparkle for the Resurrection of our Lord!  We will start at 10:00 (after Chancel Guild) and, with as little as six of us, should finish in about an hour.  Materials will be supplied; just bring something for your knees!  Please contact Alison or Bob at 216-221-4451 with questions.

EASTER BRUNCH: You’re invited to The Annual Easter Brunch, Saturday, April 7th 10am till noon. There is no cost for this event. We will begin with brunch. Please bring a brunch item to share. Families will have the opportunity to experience Holy Week in a variety of ways. We will also have table set up with information about local Christian Summer Camps along with an opportunity to craft an item from our Vacation Bible School kit. If you would like to help or have any questions please call Michelle Killin-Keith at 440-781-4161.

NAME TAGS: Each Sunday, you are invited to write out your name on a name tag and wear it so everyone will know who you are… Permanent name badges are available for ordering!  Please call the office if you would like to place an order for a badge (red background with white lettering).  The badges are available with magnetic backs or pins. (Please remember: anyone with a pacemaker should not order a magnetic back badge.)  The cost of the badge is $6.00.  Call 216-226-1772 or e-mail office@stpeterslakewood.org the office with questions or to place an order.

FEBRUARY OUTREACH PROJECT: WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL EARTHQUAKE RESTORATION FUND: In August, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the East Coast, causing significant damage to the Washington National Cathedral.  Most of the damage occurred in the highest parts of the Cathedral including the tower’s cone-shaped pinnacles of the central tower, where stones were literally shaken apart.   At least one whimsical gargoyle was damaged and one angel fell. The Cathedral is trying to raise $15 million toward restoration work.  The Washington National Cathedral is an Episcopal Church while also serving the Nation with funerals and celebration services for the entire country.  St. Peter’s Vestry has already sent $500 from its discretionary fund and we are asking you to join in this month’s outreach with your loose change in the plate. The Cathedral provided 100 “Cathedral Age,” magazines chronicling the story. Please feel free to take one and pass it along.  They are in the undercroft and at the back of the church.

“Happy are those who consider the poor; the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.” Psalm 41:1   Please, let’s fill the Hope Chests and heal a hurting world!

MUSIC AT ST. PETER’S:  Sung parts of the Eucharist during Lent are from the Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena by Healey Willan (1880-1968).  This includes the Kyrie (Lord have mercy), Sanctus (Holy, holy), and the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God).  This setting first appeared in The Hymnal 1940 and became one of the most widely used settings for Rite I.  This setting is also included in our Hymnal 1982.   Organ Music for the Sundays in Lent will be of a more quiet and contemplative nature as we pray and look towards Holy Week and the great season of Easter. This will be especially true of music at the conclusion of the Eucharist in these upcoming weeks, and everyone is invited hear these musical pieces as a continuation of our Sunday prayer and worship together.  Please come and sit in the Choir if you wish.

Journey to the Center BEGINS TONIGHT!!! “Journey to the Center” is a 13 week, basic introduction to the Christian Faith, Episcopal style led by Fr. Keith.  It is designed for people new to the church who wish to learn its beliefs and ways.  It is designed for long-time members of the church who want to renew their faith. It is designed to be fun, and to provide an opportunity to reflect on belief and practice in a caring small community.  “Journey” is also required for anyone seeking to be confirmed or received formally into the Episcopal Church.  Bishop David Bowman will make a visitation to St Peter’s on Sunday, January 13, 2013.   Any persons desiring to reaffirm their baptismal covenants through confirmation or reception at that time  need to enroll in “Journey” this time around.   Participants in “Journey” should be about 14 years old or older; they must commit to weekly attendance on Sunday evenings; they must commit to spending fifteen minutes a day doing private study at home; and they must commit to an intentional observance of Holy Week.   The course will begin on Sunday, February 26th at 6:45 p.m. in the Undercroft.  More information is available on the table in the back of the sanctuary, or by contacting Keith (216-226-1772 or  keithowen@stpeterslakewood.org).

Prayers of the People, January & February

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FOR JANUARY 29, FEBRUARY 12, 26

In the peace you give to us, O God, we now offer to you our concerns, our joys, our  sorrows and our thanksgivings.  Accept our praises, O God, through the intercession of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For all people in their daily life and work; for our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For this community, the nation, and the world; and for all courageous souls who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For the just and proper use of your creation; and for the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; and for those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God; for all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For Katherine our Presiding Bishop,

for Mark our Bishop, and for David, Bill, and Arthur, his assistants;

For the clergy and lay leadership of this diocese and parish;

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

For all who serve God within the Church, and for all who serve in the world on the Church’s behalf;  We pray today for the ministry of our outreach focus partner, UNTO, International, and for their work through the Lighthouse School in Los Al Carrizos, Dominican Republic.

Five seconds of silence

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

O God we offer up to you the special needs and concerns of this congregation gathered here today.  Hear us, Lord, for your mercy is great.

Silence.  Clergy will add specific prayers.  Remain silent for an additional

10 seconds so people may add their own petitions.

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom.  Let your loving-kindness be upon those who put their trust in you.

Silence.  Clergy will add any specific prayers.

We exalt you, O God;

And praise your Name for ever.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life.
